NCRFW promotes women’s economic empowerment
The National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women (NCRFW) and the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship (PCE) are organizing the biggest women’s entepreneurship summit on March 2, 2009 from 9 am to 6 pm at the World Trade Center in Pasay City as highlight of 2009 Women’s Month Celebration.
Dubbed as “Go Negosyo: Babae, Yaman Ka Ng Bayan!”, the event supports President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s 10-Point BEAT THE ODDS program where the development of women-led micro enterprises and jobs generated from these ventures are expected to contribute to the six to 10 million jobs targeted by the end of 2010.
The event will feature negosyo basics – best marketing practices for small enterprises, entrepreneurial financial management, leadership styles, competitiveness in the export market, technology utilization – to tips and advice on the concerns that women entrepreneurs face: health and wellness, fitness, family life and work balance.
There will also be booths and exhibitors that will showcase different products and services for women consumers.
According to NCRFW Chair Myrna T. Yao, the 2009 National Women’s Month theme “Babae, Yaman Ka Ng Bayan!” reaffirms government’s commitment to strengthen the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (UN CEDAW), this time with focus on women’s economic rights.
“The government is addressing poverty reduction by encouraging the growth of entrepreneurship through its micro finance programs and facilities for women,” Chair Yao said.
In light of the crucial economic issues that confront the Filipino women today, Chair Yao said the Go Negosyo: Babae, Yaman Ka Ng Bayan” is a fitting venue to spread the entrepreneurship advocacy among Filipino women.
“We believe that women’s economic empowerment is realized when social institutions respond to women’s immediate need for equitable access to employment, productive skills and capital, and their long term and strategic interest to overcome poverty and gender inequality. As poverty wears a woman’s face, the goal to improve women’s economic well-being becomes inevitable,” Chair Yao added.
